Saint Roch lived sometime between the 13th and 14th century. He comes from Montpellier, France. After the death of his parents, he gave away all his possessions and went on a journey to Rome. On his way he took care of people infected with plague and helped in hospitals for many years. When he himself became infected, he left to the river Po to die there. However, he became well instead, a dog who brought him bread, saved him from starving. He died in prison as an alleged spy when he came back home.
